Walk ALS Georgia – Honoring Stephen’s Uncle and Grandmother
When someone you love is diagnosed with ALS, the first question is often, “What can I do to help?” For me, the answer is clear: I’m participating in Walk ALS Georgia to raise awareness and critical funds to support Georgians living with ALS.
Stephen’s uncle, Jerry Travers, was diagnosed with ALS in 2023. We walk in honor of him and his continued courage. We also walk in loving memory of Stephen’s grandmother, Elaine Travers, who bravely battled ALS in her middle age. Our walk is personal, and our fight is urgent.
We also walk in deep appreciation for Jerry’s incredible caregivers—his wife, Karen, and his children, Bennett (Bill), Christopher, and Carson (Williamson)—who show up with strength, compassion, and love each and every day. ALS impacts the whole family, and their care makes all the difference.
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a progressive and devastating neuromuscular disease. It gradually takes away the ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe. There is no known cause. There is no cure. And the average life expectancy after diagnosis is just 2–5 years.
I am walking so that, one day, when Georgians hear the words “You have ALS,” it no longer carries a fatal prognosis.
I am walking to ensure those already living with ALS know they are not alone.
I am walking so they can receive care, resources, and hope from ALS United of Georgia.
I am walking to honor families like Jerry’s and Elaine’s—and to help others facing this fight.
And I’m walking to honor the caregivers who carry the weight of love and responsibility with such grace.
You may not know someone with ALS, but you know me.
And I’m asking: Will you join me?
You can support by making a gift to our team or signing up to walk with us. Either way, your support brings us one step closer to a future without ALS—and provides dignity and care to those who need it now.
Together, we can make a difference.
With hope,
Gracelyn
